Holy Habits (Respect)

The story of Absalom is more than an ancient family conflict. It is a mirror that reflects patterns many people recognize in their own lives. To understand Absalom, you first have to understand David. David's serious moral failures, including his role in Uriah's death and his refusal to address his son Amnon's sin against Tamar, created a household filled with unresolved pain. Absalom watched all of it, took justice into his own hands, and allowed bitterness to grow into full-scale rebellion. His three core flaws, resentment, deceit, and egotism, shaped every decision he made and ultimately led to his death. In a striking moment of irony, the hair Absalom was most proud of became the very thing that caught in a tree and ended his life during battle.

But Absalom's story is not meant to be our story. The cycle of dysfunction that ran through David's family line can be broken, and the same is true for any family. Breaking that cycle requires three intentional commitments. First, humble surrender to the Holy Spirit, trusting that His discipline, though painful, produces a harvest of right living. Second, setting aside personal desires to follow God's will, which Scripture describes simply as praying, being thankful, and continuing to do good. Third, living with steadfast integrity, not as a one-time effort but as a consistent, ongoing way of life that reflects the Holy Spirit's work over time.

Your identity as a child of God is the foundation everything else is built on. The Holy Spirit is always reaching out, always guiding, and always ready to help you take the next step toward who God made you to be. Whatever patterns you have inherited, whatever resentments you have carried, and whatever pride you have leaned on, none of it is beyond the reach of grace. You can be the one who stands at the turning point and chooses a different path.
