Holy Habits (Discernment)

In a world filled with deception and confusion, believers desperately need the wisdom that comes from the Holy Spirit. Discernment is not paranoia but the spiritual ability to distinguish between truth and error, right and wrong. While everyone possesses some level of discernment, it's how we use it that determines whether we're truly wise. This divine wisdom stands in stark contrast to earthly wisdom, which is characterized by bitter envy, selfish ambition, and disorder.

The Holy Spirit guides believers through three essential ways. First, He transforms our thinking patterns, helping us renew our minds through consistent engagement with Scripture. This transformation allows us to test and approve God's will rather than conforming to worldly patterns. Second, the Spirit enables correct discernment by teaching us to test every spirit and situation against biblical truth. Not everything spiritual is godly, and not everything emotional is Spirit-led. Finally, the Holy Spirit helps us respond wisely rather than react impulsively, teaching us the power of gentle answers and careful consideration.

Spiritual maturity involves allowing God to challenge our thinking before changing our circumstances. Many believers want their situations to change while refusing to let their mindsets be transformed. True growth comes from taking every thought captive, staying rooted in Scripture, seeking godly counsel, and learning to pause before reacting. The goal is not merely hearing God but living wisely because of His guidance in every area of life.
