Getting Past Your Past
Everyone carries history that sometimes includes painful experiences - being left out, marginalized,
judged, or told we weren't good enough. These experiences create negative messages that others
spoke over us, which often become the things we say to ourselves about ourselves. Even after
accepting Christ, many believers struggle with residue from their past because we bring our entire
history into our new life.
Jesus offers healing through the prayer of honesty, a four-step process that begins with complete
transparency before God about our pain. We must pour out our hearts like David did in the Psalms,
expressing the full weight of our hurt without holding back. After this emotional release, we wait
quietly before God, allowing the Holy Spirit to bring new perspective to our painful memories. Finally,
we praise God for the new meaning He brings to our experiences.
Like Joseph in Genesis, who eventually saw God's purpose in his brothers' betrayal, we can learn to
reinterpret our past through the lens of God's love and purpose. Our new identity in Christ declares us
lovable, valuable, forgivable, and changeable. While the devil knows our name but calls us by our sin,
Jesus knows our sin but calls us by His name. This healing isn't just for our benefit - it's for everyone
whose life intersects with ours as we step into the fullness of our future in Him.
